FIRE

Serial pyromaniac strikes sleepy town

A series of fires broke out in the town of Tidaholm in western Sweden early on Sunday morning in what is suspected as arson.

One villa was totally burned to the ground. There were also reports of four smaller fires at a neighbouring house, in a hotel cellar, a carport and a pile of car tyres.

“We were asleep when our neighbour came knocking and yelling that the balcony was on fire,” Nebojsa Naskovic told news agency TT. “It feels like hell, but we were lucky to survive.”

The villa inferno was the most severe of the blazes, but Nebojsa and his wife and two children managed to escape safely.

The police are treating the fires with suspicion and have begun a forensic investigation. There are no suspects yet and no one has been arrested.

Police spokesman Lars Johansson told The Local: “The investigation of the scene is being finished today after which we will get together and look for a motive. I don’t want to speculate, but this is definitely about arson.”

One man was treated for smoke inhalation after trying to extinguish the hotel fire.
