The one-tonne model of the animal kingdom’s largest creature will be on display when the €60-million aquarium and oceanographic museum Stralsund’s Ozeaneum opens in July. Environmental group Greenpeace has supported the project with €1.45 million.
Theatre set sculptors from a specialty firm in Dresden are working under the supervision of whale experts on the project, which will also include models of a 16 metre-long humpback whale and its calf, an 8 metre-long orca whale, and an 8 metre-long basking shark.
“The fascinating presentation corresponds exactly with our mission, which is why we decided to undertake our organization’s biggest project to date,” said project director Thomas Henningsen on Friday.
The exhibit, Riesen der Meere, or “Giants of the Ocean,” will feature other spectacular eyecatchers like a sperm whale fighting a giant squid. Corresponding light and sound installations will round out the exhibit, which will also include multimedia presentations on environmental dangers to sea life.
The 9,000 square metre Stralsunder Ozeaneum will have 6 million litres of salt water for 39 different aquariums.
