“We highly recommend customers against paying with EC cards and their PIN numbers,” Hartmut Strube, a legal expert at the Consumer Protection Centre North Rhine-Westphalia, told the Süddeutschen Zeitung on Friday.
According to the paper, Lidl has admitted it cannot completely rule out that some of its video footage might record a customer’s PIN number. Therefore, the discount supermarket suggests shoppers cover the keypad with their hands.
German news magazine Stern last month discovered Lidl was guilty of spying on its own employees. The massive surveillance operation was widely criticized for breaching privacy standards. Lidl has since publicly apologized.
