Of the some 2 million alcoholics in Germany, only every tenth person receives appropriate rehabilitation treatment, according to Claudia Spies from Berlin’s University Clinic Charité.

The fault for the treatment gap lies with the behaviour of doctors who don’t trust themselves to ask the right questions, Spies said in a statement for the German Society for Internal Medicicine (DGIM) in Wiesbaden.

Many patients fend off questions about their alcohol consumption, Spies continued.

Alcohol addiction and related illnesses will be the focal point of a medical symposium that begins in Wiesbaden on Wednesday.
