Foreign drivers targeted for speeding fines

New EU regulations will make it harder for foreign drivers to avoid the payment of traffic fines incurred in Sweden.

A new electronic system within the EU will ease the exchange of information across member countries and help to track down drivers who evade payment of speeding and other traffic fines.

“As it looks today foreign drivers that commit offences in Sweden can in principle just choose to throw away their parking or speeding tickets in the bin. We have neither the harmonized legislation nor the conditions needed to collect the fines,” said Bengt Svensson of the National Police Board (Rikspolisstyrelsen) to Svenska Dagbladet.

A new directive from the EU Commission is set to address the situation and the directive contains regulations to assist authorities in tracking offenders.

Sweden currently has an arrangement with its Scandinavian neighbours which makes it possible to collect fines across the national borders.
