Chicken theft nets fine and suspended sentence

Animal rights activists have been fined and served a two-year suspended sentence for the theft of 12 hens.

The activists from the movement Älska din nästa (Love thy neighbour) stole 12 hens from a research farm in November 2007.

Uppsala District Court ordered the activists on Thursday to each pay a 2,500 kronor ($416) fine plus a combined 62,000 kronor in compensation to the research farm.

The activists were also served with a two-year suspended sentence.

“The verdict is a clear sign of the acceptance of the exploitation of animals in our society,” said one of the activists to Sveriges Radio Skaraborg.
