Swedish cities set their own climate targets

Municipalities in Sweden aren’t waiting for the government to set up the country’s climate goals--they’re moving ahead with their own plans instead.

According to a poll by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC), more than forty of the country’s municipalities have set up their own targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions which are tougher than the EU’s long-term goals, writes the Dagens Nyheter newspaper.

The municipalities’ efforts are summarized in an index, which SSNC will use as the basis for choosing the Climate Municipality of the Year on Tuesday.

Of the 209 municipalities who responded to the questionnaire, 57 percent said they had a concrete goal for limiting carbon dioxide emissions under a certain period of time. A further 27 percent are working toward such goals.

Markaryd in southern Sweden leads among municipalities working toward a quick reduction of CO2 emissions, followed by western Sweden’s Lilla Edet, and Stockholm.
