Bildt to break ice with Kosovo visit

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt will travel to Pristina this weekend, the first visit by a foreign minister since Kosovo declared independence, the Swedish government said on Thursday.

“On Saturday he will hold talks with Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and President Fatmir Sejdiu as well as representatives of (the UN mission in Kosovo) UNMIK and the EU,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Bildt will also travel to the Albanian section of Mitrovica, an ethnically divided flashpoint town with Serbs in the north and Albanians in the south.

On Friday, the Swedish diplomat will travel to Macedonia where he will meet with Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki “to discuss … the situation in the region.”

Sweden officially recognised Kosovo’s independence on Tuesday.

Ethnic Albanian-majority Kosovo unilaterally proclaimed independence from Serbia on February 17 and has since been recognised by many Western countries.
