The fire broke out in the former premises of Posten, the Swedish postal service, on Vasagatan in central Stockholm at around 4am Saturday. A police patrol noticed smoke as they were passing by and sounded the alarm, reports Dagens Nyheter.

Crews from six fire stations took part in the battle to put out the fire. After an hour the fire had been brought under control. Work to extinguish the fire continued until around 8am on Saturday.

Fire services managed to hinder the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings although there was a heavy build-up of smoke in the vicinity.

The fire affected mainly office premises and nobody required evacuation while the fire was brought under control by the 40 fireman employed at the scene.
