Zille Children of the Street

Rudolf Heinrich Zille, who would have turned 150 this year, published his first book Kinder der Strasse exactly one century ago. The comedic German illustrator was also an adept photographer, who documented Berlin’s less fortunate folk in the early 1900s. Fifty of Zille’s drawings, prints, and photographs of and for children are on view through Sunday.

Strong Beer Weeks

With an average of 700 calories per liter, the malty, double-bock brew called Starkbier kept Munich’s monks going during the Lenten season. Breweries around the city offer their own Starkbier, but the three-week season kicks off at the Paulaner Inn. The final week is upon us, so fill up while you can.

Mark Rothko Retrospective

Fill up on color at Kunsthalle’s Mark Rothko Retrospective. The Russian-born, American abstract expressionist painter became famous for his large-format canvases, adorned with layered panes of colour. Over 100 works comprise the exhibition, the first Rothko retrospective in Germany since the one in Cologne in 1988.

Kurt Weill Music Festival

Concerts, readings, guided tours, films, art exhibitions, and a ball, all based around the theme “dream,” can be enjoyed during this 10-day festival devoted to one of Germany’s musical stars. Highlights include the Mahler Chamber Orchestra playing Weill’s violin concerto, a duet performance by tenor Ian Bostridge, and soprano Sophie Daneman, the Ensemble Modern’s rendition of Stravinsky’s “A Soldier’s Story,” and a finale of Broadway tunes. It’s sure to be a rollicking good time.
