Bayern’s Van Bommel to fight three-match ban

Bayern Munich's Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel will contest the three-match suspension handed to him for making an obscene gesture to the referee in a Bundesliga game, it was revealed Thursday.

The Dutchman was booked late in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Hamburg for time-wasting which earned him a yellow card, but he was shown a second yellow – and the compulsorily red – when he made an obscene gesture to the referee.

The German Football Association (DFB) gave him a three-match ban for his action, but the 30-year-old insists he was responding to Hamburg fans in the Allianz Arena crowd.

He will now appear in front of a DFB disciplinary committee in Frankfurt to explain his side of the story. The committee’s chairman will then make a final ruling on the matter. But the evidence against van Bommel is concrete – television cameras clearly showed him making the gesture while staring at the referee Lutz Wagner who saw what was happening as he turned round.

Van Bommel, known for his fiery temperament on the pitch, will definitely miss Saturday’s clash with Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen as a red card automatically carries a minimum one-match ban.

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
