Tito Beltran appeals rape conviction

Opera star Tito Beltran has appealed against a conviction and two year prison sentence imposed for the rape of an 18-year-old nanny in 1999.

Beltran’s lawyer, Tomas Nilsson, wrote in the appeal that Ystad District Court’s judgement was flawed, incomplete and plain wrong according to local newspaper Ystad Allehanda. Beltran was sentenced to two years in prison by Ystad District Court on Tuesday.

In a unanimous verdict, the court also ordered Beltran, 42, to pay the woman 112,000 kronor ($17,000) in damages.

Nilsson argues that the court has made an incomplete analysis of the testimony of the former nanny. He argues that insufficient notice has been taken of the inconsistencies between her testimony and that of key witness, Maria Lundqvist.

Former police officer, Monica Dahlström-Lannes, is not spared Nilsson’s criticism. She is accused of weakening the quality of the investigation with Nilsson arguing that:

“It is simply not meant that an outsider should participate in an investigation in the manner that she has. This should be reserved to police and the prosecutor.”
