German pimp suspect arrested in Sweden

A 48-year-old German man has been arrested in southern Sweden on suspicion of involvement in a major prostitution ring in Berlin. The man was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant issued by Germany.

The man was arrested at an unspecified location in the south of Småland county on Tuesday. He is suspected of pimping offences in Berlin in 2005 and 2006, according to prosecutor Stefan Gradler at the International Prosecutors’ Office in Malmö.

Gradler said that the man now under arrest is one of several people involved in the case, and that a Berlin court ordered him to be detained last November. He has been in Sweden for a year, prosecutors say.

The accused man will appear before Växjö District Court on Wednesday morning. The court will decide whether to grant Germany’s application to return him to Berlin.

“Extradition cases within Europe have become a lot easier since the European Arrest Order was introduced,” said Gradler.

“A decision from a district court is enough for the suspect to be handed over to the country in which he is suspected of committing a crime.”
