Join the Club: Football

With pre-season training getting underway at football clubs all over Sweden, now may be an ideal time to dust off the boots and get involved with your local outfit.

At the grassroots level, there are well-organized leagues in operation all over the country, offering suitable alternatives for everyone from the fit young goal machine to the paunchy veteran.

Here we provide a small sampling of some of the clubs operating in Sweden’s two largest cities, followed by details on how to get in touch with clubs in your local area.

Stockholm

With three men’s and two women’s teams, Långholmen FC is Stockholm’s largest English-speaking football club.

Established in 2002, the club has taken the Stockholm league by storm, needing just five seasons to make the leap from Division 8 to Division 4.

The first team is supplemented by a Reserves outfit and a third team playing in the less competitive Korpen league.

The club also has a women’s Korpen team and is for the first time preparing to enter a women’s team to the Stockholm league for the 2008 season.

Another English-speaking club doing the business last year was the Tudor Arms FC.

The team affiliated with the oldest English pub in the capital capped a fine season by securing promotion to Division 6.

The Tudor Arms also has a veterans team, which will need to produce some serious samba football if it is to defeat the likes of Sol de America and Bolivia IF when the new season kicks off in April.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

VIDEO: Spain's La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
