Thai Air the subject of a bribery investigation

Authorities from Sweden's Prosecution Authority have decided to investigate Thai Air's practice of offering steep discounts to Swedish journalists travelling to Thailand.

Thai Air the subject of a bribery investigation

According to a report in Dagens Nyheter, investigators decided to look into the matter following a report last fall in the newspaper Resume claiming that journalists were offered round trip tickets to Thailand for 2300 kronor excluding taxes.

“I decided to start an investigation and have given certain directives to the Stockholm county police. No one has been notified that they are a suspect in the case,” said prosecutor Malin Palmgren.

Investigators will try to determine if the Thai Air discount amounts to bribery.

Thai Air’s sales manager in Sweden, Jonas Broström isn’t worried however. He claims the offer wasn’t exclusively for journalists and was available to the general public.

“We had a summer campaign between April 24th and June 15th. It was sent out to all travel agencies in Sweden which sell our trips and the offer was inte directed to members of any specific occupation,” he said.
