Sports Digest: Sweden second in Karjala Cup

Ice hockey

Sweden clinched second place in the four-nation Karjala Cup on Sunday with a 1-0 win over hosts Finland.

The visitors were forced to field a weakened team as three players – Jhonas Enroth, Magnus Kahnberg and Daniel Tjärnqvist – were all ruled out due to illness.

Stefan Liv proved a solid replacement for Enroth in the Swedish goal, pulling off a string of saves to keep the Finns at bay. Nils Ekman scored Sweden’s winner in the third period.

The Swedes went into the game knowing that they could not win the tournament after Russia’s 4-1 win over the Czechs earlier in the day.

Sweden finished the tournament on six points after scoring a victory over the Czech Republic following defeat in the opener against Russia.

Football

There were mixed fortunes midweek for the two Swedish clubs taking part in the group stages of the UEFA cup.

Despite a disappointing league campaign, Helsingborg pulled off a famous victory in Turkey as they beat Galatasaray 3-2.

Returned hero Henrik Larsson bagged the opener to make him joint top scorer with five goals at this stage of the competition. Razak Omotoyossi and Christoffer Andersson also scored to cancel out Shaani Nonda’s brace for the home side.

“We were fantastic,” Larsson told the UEFA website. “Everyone was fighting like animals.”

The win leaves Helsingborg second in Group H behind Bordeaux.

Last season’s Swedish champions Elfsborg meanwhile were on the receiving end of a 6-1 hiding as they travelled to Italy to face Fiorentina.

The defeat to the high-flying Viola means that Elfsborg are second from bottom of Group C.

Bandy

Fighting broke out between rival bandy supporters in Västerås on Sunday. Around 20 people were involved in the fracas between fans of Västerås SK and Stockholm club Hammarby.

Police made two arrests. A 16-year-old was sent home to Stockholm, while a 20-year-old was arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

In front of a crowd of 5,400 home supporters, Västerås went on to win their first game of the season 10-4.

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
