Young Social Democrats choose new chairwoman

The youth wing of Sweden's Social Democrats, SSU, has chosen a new chairwoman.

Young Social Democrats choose new chairwoman

Jytte Guteland, 27, was elected to the position at SSU’s annual conference in Örebro, central Sweden. She beat opponent Laila Naraghi, gaining 249 votes to Naraghi’s 131.

Guteland is currently studying economics at Södertörn University College (Södertörns Högskola) and is a Social Democrat councillor in Solna.

SSU has been without a president since December last year, after then-chairwoman Anna Sjödin resigned in disgrace. Sjödin was convicted of assaulting a bouncer at a Stockholm bar, in an incident that caused embarrassment for the party in the run-up to last September’s election.

The organization’s secretary Mattias Vepsä has been standing in as chairman since Sjödin’s resignation. He was re-elected secretary by party colleague’s on Wednesday.
