Minister backs discrimination test

'Situation testing' could become a viable weapon against discrimination in the workplace, Sweden's integration minister has said.

Speaking to newspaper Göteborgs-Posten, Nyamko Sabuni said she would welcome wider use of the method, in which an authority submits job applications from people with the same qualifications but different backgrounds to see if discrimination is taking place.

The method is currently used in Sweden as a research tool. But whether it can be used as evidence in court cases is a matter of controversy and the minister is keen to initiate an inquiry to examine the possibility.

“But I can’t say today whether it would work or not. Nevertheless, it’s important to look into it. The situation is so serious that we shouldn’t reject any ideas,” said Nyamko Sabuni to GP.

In the interview the integration minister also said she supported tougher penalties for anyone found guilty of discrimination.
