ABORTION

Christian Democrats could demand abortion review

The Christian Democrat Party could call for the upper limit on abortions to be reduced from the current 22 weeks, it has been reported.

The leadership of the party has said it wants a review of the abortion laws, and says it could agree with members to push for a review of the maximum limit for abortions in Sweden, according to documents seen by Svenska Dagbladet.

Under current rules, a woman can have an abortion up to the 22nd week of pregnancy in exceptional circumstances, as long as the National Board of Health and Welfare approves.

Party members have also been pushing for the upper limit for abortions without special permission to be reduced from 18 weeks to 12 weeks. The party leadership has rejected this approach, according to Svenska Dagbladet.

The Christian Democrats traditionally take a restrictive line on abortion. The party’s leader, Göran Hägglund, who is also Minister for Social Affairs, has faced internal criticism for a decision to allow foreign women to come to Sweden for abortions.
