The new museum, due to open to visitors in spring 2009, will be housed in a former customs office, after a deal was reached with Stockholm City Council, which owns the building. The story of the Swedish band – the third most successfull musical act of all time, after the Beatles and Elvis – will be told through exhibitions on three floors.
The museum promises to go easy on dusty display cases, vowing instead to make the experience interactive and entertaining. It will make full use of multimedia technology, with film material forming a significant part of the exhibition. It will also include a mock-up of Polar Studios, where the band recorded. Here, visitors will be able to record their own versions of famous Abba songs.
The plan to open the museum was announced last November. Since then, organizers have been focused on finding a location. Ulf Westman, who together with wife Eva owns the company behind the project, said that interest for the idea had been “enormous”.
“When we announced this it was reported in over 700 media worldwide. Abba is simply the biggest brand Sweden has,” he said.
“The new site right in the middle of the city, and is easily accessible from ferries, buses and the subway.”
The building is to be rented from Stockholm City Council.
