Builders set to go on strike

The strike will lead to 1,000 workers at Peab walking out from 5am.

The Swedish Construction Federation (BI) has accepted the mediators’ proposal, but Byggnads said the proposal was not the basis for an agreement.

Wage increases in the proposed deal were below the framework for wage development sketched out in the so-called Agreement on Industrial Development and Wage Formation. Byggnads’ demands regarding holidays were also not met, the union said.

“The proposed actual reduction in working time is only one day over a three year period,” according to a union press release.

Whether the strike goes ahead tomorrow morning “will depend on conclusions of the ongoing negotiations with mediators,” said Byggnads’ press secretary Håkan Olander.

Byggnads’ chairman Hans Tilly said that the principal reason for not signing the agreement was that “we were not heard out on the whole of our proposed agreement.”

“We will meet the mediators again after they have met the employers. After that, we’ll make a decision about whether to reschedule the strike,” Tilly said.
