Evacuations as blaze destroys warehouse

45 apartments were evacuated on Friday night as a fierce blaze swept through a warehouse near a wooden residential building in central Örnsköldsvik .

“It’s a total burnout. But it’s good in the sense that nobody has been reported injured,” Hans Häggström at Västernorrland police.

The fire broke out at around 9.30pm. The warehouse was consumed by the fire in just a few hours, producing a significant amount of smoke in the area.

For a while it seemed that the blaze would spread to the residential building but just before 1am the emergency services brought it under control. A short while later, evacuated residents were able to return home.

It is still not clear how the fire began, but investigators believe it started in a garbage room in the warehouse.
