Christian Democrat snubs party in abortion protest

Christian Democratic politician Lars F Eklund has decided not to run for reelection when the party votes for a new board during next summer. The move is a reaction to party leader Göran Hägglund's support for a proposal to allow women from other countries to have abortions in Sweden.

Eklund is one of a number of leading Christian Democrat party members to react strongly to the social minister’s stance, which is viewed as being inconsistent with party policy on the issue.

“It is unnaceptable that Sweden’s first Christian Democratic social minister is actively supporting a law with the very intention of increasing the possibility of ending innocent, budding human lives in our country,” Eklund told Svenska Dagbladet.

Lars F Eklund has been a member of the party board for almost ten years. He was an adviser to the government from 1991 to 1994 and is head of Christian Democratic think tank Civitas.
