“A natural decision to take,” said Ambassador Robert Rydberg to newspaper Sydsvenskan after giving the intern the news on Monday.
“A remarkable decision,” was the reaction of Göran Bostedt, associate professor at the University of Central Sweden in Sundsvall, speaking to Svenska Dagbladet.
The 25-year old intern has a degree in economics and was scheduled to carry out jobs including market research for the embassy.
Diplomats at the embassy did not know about his political involvement or the fact that he had made his views known in the Internet. He had warned on his blog that Sweden is being taken over by immigrants, and compared the “problem” with HIV weakening the body.
Robert Rydberg said that the intern had not mentioned his involvement in the Sweden Democrats. Rydberg also said that the man’s opinions would be characterised as undemocratic and xenophobic by mainstream political parties. They are not compatible with a job at a Swedish overseas mission, he said.
But Göran Bostedt said Rydberg’s conclusions went against the Swedish civil service culture. It is wrong to be shut own from certain jobs for having certain opinions, Bostedt said.
“The kind of labour ban that Germany had a few years ago,” Bostedt said.
