Two Social Democratic politicians, Egil Ahl and Kjell Nilsson met last week with the Sweden Democrats’ Per Klarberg.
“Kjell and Egil were very wound up about their suggestion that we cooperate,” said Klarberg.
“I said to Egil, ‘are you aware that collaboration with the Sweden Democrats will shake the window panes all the way up to your party headquarters in Stockholm?’
“The answer I got was that he was aware of the risk and was willing to take it,” Klarberg added.
Kjell Nilsson has defended the discussions, claiming that he has a right to talk to any party he sees fit.
“Our party may have a different perception at the leadership level, or any other level, but as a local politican I have a right to talk to whoever I want,” said Nilsson.
“The Sweden Democrats are now the third biggest party in the municipality and, as a result, have much more to contribute than the Greens, Centre Party or Liberals. Over this term the Sweden Democrats have shared our views on many, many issues.
“What is more, many of our voters chose the Sweden Democrats this time. Why should we not be able to listen to them now after the election?” Nilsson wondered.
Nilsson and Ahl have now both decided to resign from politics. Nilsson denies that the decision has anything to do with the pair’s talks with Per Klarberg.
