Eliasson condemns Israeli raids

Swedish Foreign Minister and former UN assembly president Jan Eliasson on Sunday condemned Israeli raids on the Lebanese village of Qana that killed at least 51 civilians and appealed for an immediate cessation in hostilities.

“There is strong reason to condemn the attack against the housing complex in Qana leading to the deaths of civilians including children,” Eliasson told AFP.

Eliasson appealed for an end to the fighting and for the adpotion of a UN resolution.

“It is time to end this madness. The UN Security Council must accept its responsibility and immediately adopt a resolution to bring an end to hostilities,” Eliasson said.

It was time for a political and diplomatic offensive rather than a military one, Eliasson added.
