Olsson to appeal against double murder conviction

The man convicted in April of the abduction, rape and murder of a 10 year old girl and a 26 year old prostitute in 1989, is to appeal against the judgement.

His lawyer, Sven Jernryd, delivered the application to the Court of Appeal and then announced that he would no longer be serving Olsson.

“He has requested a new lawyer, and therefore he clearly has no confidence in me,” said Jernryd.

“The feeling is mutual.”

In March 1989 Helén Nilsson disappeared from near her home in Hörby, Skåne. Six days later her naked body was found in a plastic bag in a forest 25km from her home. In August of the same year Jannica Ekblad was found dead in a similar type of bag.

Last summer, DNA analysis finally linked Olsson to the murders. But throughout the trial, he was uncooperative, either refusing to answer or claiming that he had no recollection of events around the time Helén and Jannica disappeared.

In April Olsson was found guilty of abducting, raping and murdering Helén and Jannica and sentenced to life imprisonment. But three months later the sentence was changed on appeal and he was sent to a secure psychiatric unit.

Now, Olsson wants the convictions overturned entirely and the order to pay damages to relatives quashed.
