One in five students lacks grades for upper secondary

As many as one in five students in Sweden have left compulsory primary school (grundskola), in Sweden without earning the necessary qualifications to go on to upper secondary school (gymnasium) preliminary statistics collected from Sweden’s five biggest municipalities have shown.

In Stockholm, 87 percent of pupils reached the required level, in Malmö, it was 81 percent, and in Gothenburg only 77 percent of pupils earned the necessary grades to move on to upper secondary school.

“It’s obvious that there around enough resources to get pupils to the required level,” said Christian Lundahl, a professor of education at Örebro University.

“It would absolutely be possible to improve the number of students qualifying if more resources were given so schools could provide support to the groups of pupils falling out of the system.”

Swedish vocabulary: behörighet – qualification

Price of flats and houses falls again in July

The price of flats and houses fell by 1.1 percent in July, although when seasonally adjusted prices of both rose slightly, with the price of apartments up 0.4 percent and detached houses up by 0.2 percent.

“It’s a bit surprising that the price of flats is developing better than that of detached houses this year because many apartment cooperatives (bostadsrättsföreningar) are facing higher monthly fees,” said Robert Boije, chief economist at the publicly owned mortgage lender SBAB.

Murder at sea suspected after death in Gothenburg Archipelago

Police in western Sweden have seized a man for suspected murder after another man died in a boating accident in the Gothenburg Archipelago on Thursday.

A rescue operation was launched after a passing boat reported a man overboard following a yachting accident 25km offshore, west of the island of Rörö.

About half an hour later the man was winched out of the water and taken to hospital by helicopter, but his life could not be saved.

A second man, who had also fallen into the water, was picked up by the rescue services, only to later be charged with suspected murder.

Swedish teens held in Denmark after shootings in Kolding and Copenhagen

Two Swedish teenagers, of17 and 16 years old, have been placed in pre-trial detention in Denmark after carrying out two shootings in Kolding and Copenhagen on Wednesday.

According to Danish police, the two youths were recruited on social media to commit crimes in Denmark. In the Kolding shooting a man was shot at least three times in the leg, and in the Copenhagen shooting, at the Blågårds Plads square in Nørrebro, no one was injured.

“We have seen that criminals are looking for people willing to commit serious crimes on social media and that young Swedes unfortunately are agreeing to do so for payment,” Torben Svarrer, from the Danish police’s unit for serious crimes, told the TT newswire.

Swedish vocabulary: värvas på sociala medier – recruited on social media

Police investigate yet another accident at Northvolt

Police in Sweden are investigating yet another accident at Northvolt’s battery facility in Skellefteå, after an employee received burns to their forehead after getting sprayed in the face with solvent.

The accident happened on Sunday during the cleaning of a pipe and although the worker was wearing a face mask it did not cover their entire head.

“We have launched a preliminary investigation into workplace environment crimes and causing bodily damage through negligence,” Elisabeth Glaas, a police press spokesperson, told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

The factory has been hit by several accidents and police are currently investigating the case of three men in Skellefteå who were mysteriously found dead after their shift at the factory.

It is still unclear if their deaths were caused by something they were exposed to during their shift.

Sweden signs nuclear energy deal with US

Sweden has signed a Memorial of Understanding with the US to cooperate on the building of new nuclear plants, something Sweden’s minister for business and energy said would help make it possible for her government to meet its ambition of a “massive expansion of nuclear power”.

“Sweden and the US are going to have a concrete cooperation on nuclear power,” Busch said. “This is a good day for Sweden. It’s a good day for the USA, for jobs, for competitiveness and, of course, for the green transition.”

Busch signed the memorandum at a meeting in Washington DC alongside her US counterpart Jennifer Granholm.

Number of people caught drunk sailing sinks

Less than 2 percent of people at sea given random breath tests by the Swedish coastguard were charged for drunk sailing in July, a dramatic fall from the same month in 2023, 2022 and 2021, when 3.65 percent, 3.71 percent and 5.57 percent were found to be over the limit.

Of the 1,377 people checked in July on Sweden’s coasts and in Lake Vännen and Lake Mälaren, only 25 were over the allowed alcohol limit, or 1.82 percent.

“These checks provide further evidence of the positive trend towards sobriety at sea,” said Mikael Furberg, head of the coastguard’s operational division. Yachtspeople know the rules and are following them to a large extent.”

Swedish vocabulary: sjöfylleri – drunk sailing

Bankruptcies in Sweden up in July

The number of bankruptcies increased again in July, after falling in June, with the worst-hit industry, property, seeing a 50 percent increase.

In July, the number of bankrupties in Sweden was up 12 percent compared to the same month in 2023, according to new figures from the privately owned credit checking company, Upplysningscentralen (UC).

“This is a disappointment. We had hoped that things were on the turn, but that’s not the way it turned out,” said Petter Alvsten, a credit analyst at the company.

He blamed the continuing decline in the Swedish kronor, which increased purchasing costs for companies while reducing the value of revenues earned in Sweden. In the construction industry, the number of bankruptcies grew by 14 percent.

Swedish vocabulary: konkurs – bankruptcy

Swedish handball team go to IKEA in Paris for better beds

The Swedish women’s handball team has made a name for itself at the Paris Olympics, but perhaps not for the right reasons.

Unhappy at the hardness of the mattresses in the Olympic village, they took a trip to the local branch of Sweden’s Ikea to buy softer ones, news that was picked up in the French press

“They were so hard,” complained Jamina Roberts, one of the players to the TT newswire. “The problem isn’t the beds made out of cardboard, those are fine, but the mattresses which are so hard. They are completely new, so it’s going to taken a while before they soften up, but we felt we couldn’t face waiting as we needed to sleep well from the start.”

Sweden’s coach, Tomas Axnér, said that while it may seem like a trifle, good sleep was crucial to good performance.
